FORMER England footballer Alan Shearer has recorded a touching message of support for Swindon dad Jamie Mines, who is recovering in hospital after a serious electric shock.

Jamie, 33, who was a semi-professional footballer, he has remained in a critical condition in hospital in Bristol since the accident while he was on scaffolding in Galton Way on December 19.

The dad of five-month-old twin girls had to have one leg and part of both his arms amputated.

A Go Fund Me page has raised more than £67,600 in support of his recovery.

At the weekend world champion boxer Joe Calzaghe pledged his support, saying: “Jamie has had a terrible accident and so I am going to donate a pair of signed boxing gloves and boxing shorts to raise money for him.

"It is a great cause so everyone dig deep and give all you can and God bless.”

His friend Ian Kennedy, who set up the Go Fund Me page, posted an update saying: “Jamie's condition has been improving over the last few days. He has been off the ventilator and awake for a time each day and has started the most basic of rehabilitation.

"You'll all be happy to know that he has a TV in his room and has managed to watch a bit of football.

"He is still in Intensive Care and has a way to go before he can come out of there, but it's great to have some positive news to share. Thanks again for all your support."

Today Ian said the football legend's video "brought tears to my eyes" and he thanked Radio 2 DJ James Carpenter for organising it.

Jamie moved to Swindon a year ago and it is understood he was working for Boundary Scaffolding at the time of the accident and the Health And Safety Executive is investigating.
