MORE than £70,000 has been raised for Swindon dad Jamie Mines who is recovering well in hospital after a serious electric shock.

The 33-year-old, who was a semi-professional footballer, has remained in a critical condition in hospital in Bristol since the accident while he was on scaffolding in Galton Way on December 19.

As a result of his injuries, the dad of five-month-old twin girls had to have one leg and part of both his arms amputated.

To help with the costs of his life-changing injuries, Jamie’s friend Ian Kennedy, who lives in his hometown of Frome, decided to set up a Go Fund Me Page which hit national headlines this week as sporting stars such as boxer Joe Calzaghe and footballing legend Alan Shearer pledged their support.

Ian, 32, said he has been overwhelmed by the support. He added: “When I heard that Jamie had to have his leg and part of his arms amputated I thought this is going to change his life forever so why not make the target £100,000.

“I never expected to reach £70,000 and to get this reaction and publicity is just amazing.

"We have been getting so many messages of support and Alan Shearer was our number 1 because Jamie is such a big Newcastle fan so it was amazing and just unbelievable to see that message.”

Jamie’s condition is believed to be steadily improving in hospital with the young dad being taken off the ventilator and awake for a time each day although is not yet able to speak.

Ian added: “There is a long way to go and Jamie’s brother Ben has said although his progress is positive, we have to take each day as it comes.”
