A COUNCILLOR is celebrating the success of his three-year campaign to see the introduction of new 20mph speed limits in Melksham.

Councillor Jon Hubbard spearheaded the project to improve safety for people walking to and from Melksham Oak School along Waverley Gardens and Kenilworth Gardens.

Cllr Hubbard said: “It was hard work but we got there in the end.

"I have been talking to people in the area who have said that the signs have been effective. They make people think.

“I am glad that the area has become a safer place for pedestrians and residents.

“It is wonderful that it has finally happened. It just goes to show that all the hard work and waiting have paid off.”

Originally there were also plans to resurface the road at the Kenilworth Gardens junction but that idea was shelved – although the delay meant the cost of the project doubled from £4,500 to £9,000.

"I have already got a letterbox full of people wanting the same thing for their roads," said Cllr Hubbard. "But the thing about adding these limits is that it's rather expensive. You need to be able to ensure it will make a difference.

"I will continue to speak to people who have their concerns and see what we can do throughout the town,” he added.
