SUPPORTED by her two best friends, Morgan Ruby Leigh did her bit to raise money for Cancer Research UK after school on Friday all in honour of her ‘special nanna’ who is battling the disease.

The nine-year-old Noremarsh Junior School pupil came up the idea after her nanna Marilyn was diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer in September.

Wanting to help raise awareness but also raise money for research into the disease, Morgan set about organising a bake sale along with her friends Ella Prewett, 10 and Lauren Roberts, 10 – raising £118.30 in just 30 minutes.

Morgan said: “I wanted to do something for my nanna because she is always up to do anything with me. She liked theme parks and doing things like that and she was really active before she found out.

“We all tried to make cakes to sell and other people have brought them along for us to sell so it makes me happy that people have come to help.”

It is the first time that the trio have ever done a fundraiser but they hope the money raised will help the charity fund research into finding a cure for cancer.

Morgan’s mum Ceri Tranter, 39 was on hand to help the girls and said she was immensely proud of what they achieved.

“When Morgan approached the headmaster of the school to say my mum has cancer and that she would like to do something to help support and raise money for Cancer Research, I couldn’t believe it.

“Her friends said they would support here and the three of them have organised it all by themselves.

“They managed to spread the word to the other children in assemblies and they had to do a presentation about why they were raising money and we couldn’t believe how many people got behind them.

“To think that Morgan is only nine years old and to come up with this just makes me so proud. We didn’t know how she would take mum’s diagnosis but she has dealt with it with such maturity. Morgan and her nanna have such a close bond and Morgan has embraced that things have changed.

“She raises any questions about the chemo or the illness especially when things take a turn for the worse or better.”
