TAKEAWAY containers, wing mirrors and underwear were all removed from roadside verges in and around Corsham over the weekend as keen litter pickers got to work in the spirit of the Great British Spring Clean.

More than a dozen residents got together to pick up 20 bags worth of litter from all around Corsham and the surrounding areas on Sunday and organiser Victoria Conrad said it was a great success.

"We picked up about 20 bags and worked mostly on the roads leading out of Corsham, although some of the volunteers also went to do the roads near Pickwick, Neston and heading towards Melksham. We didn't do the A4 and that is playing on my mind a bit but we could always go back in a few weeks.

"Aside from picking up lots of underwear and a few boots, we also came across a tumble drier, which we have reported to the council, and lots of asbestos. It's hard not to think about the little birds and hedgehogs who could be trying to live there.

"I would like to do it again in a couple of weeks but anyone could do it - it is so easy to organise. I don't know why we don't do it more often."

The Great British Spring Clean was a nationwide campaign that took place over the weekend and supported by local authorities such as Wiltshire Council, who provided the budding volunteers with tabards, bags and litter pickers.
