A MOTORCYCLIST who died in a crash with a van on the A361 last week has been named by police as 31-year-old Iain Jones from Beckhampton.

Mr Jones, who was driving a Honda GL with a sidecar, died at the scene at around 7.30am on March 7.

The van driver from Devizes escaped with only minor injuries but his vehicle was destroyed by fire.

After the accident Bishops Cannings Parish Council chairman Paul Robinson called for urgent action to be taken and had the chance to speak to Wiltshire highways boss Philip Whitehead at a parish council meeting on Thursday.

Mr Robinson put forward the idea of warning signs telling drivers how many accidents had happened along the stretch of road between Bishops Cannings and the Beckhampton Roundabout could be a deterrent.

But Coun Whitehead said this week that he did not think signs would be appropriate as the part of the road where last week's crash happened.

He said: "I don't think they would have the impact that would be desired and there is not the consensus of data for that stretch of the road to support it."

He said the council had carried out improvements to the crossroad junction leading to North Wiltshire Golf Club after data showed a number of accidents had been caused by people pulling out too far, especially at night.

He said the council would continue to monitor the A361.
