THE relationship between Trowbridge and its twinned town was strengthened once more as the town welcomed councillors from its German counterpart.

Six councillors from Leer’s council flew over to England to attend Trowbridge Civic Dinner and visit nearby cities including Bath and Cardiff.

On Monday, they went for a walk up Westbury White Horse with representatives from Trowbridge's twinning association group before taking a tour of the microbrewery at the Three Daggers in Edington.

Cllr John Knight, chairman of Trowbridge's twinning association group, said: “Every year they come over for the Civic Dinner and they like to make a long weekend of it.

“When they arrived on Thursday we took them to Lacock for lunch and on Friday, two representatives from Hospiz Leer met up with people from Dorothy House, which is their equivalent.

“We all enjoyed a walk up the White Horse on Monday before testing a few ales at the Three Daggers’ microbrewery.

“They were a bit bothered after Brexit so it’s important to send them a message that we are not anti-European.

“The majority of people who voted for Brexit were against the institution, not the union, and the fact we keep in close contact with them highlights this.”

Leer is a town similar in size to Trowbridge, located in Ostfriesland, North West Germany, close to the border of Holland, with a very flat terrain.
