DINERS in Marlborough have been enjoying the menu after a town pub got a new look.

Following an extensive refurbishment of the Wellington Arms, which now bases its menu around Pieminster's award-winning pies, earlier this month, customers have been pouring into the High Street pub, which has had its kitchen, dining area and beer garden completely refitted.

Wellington Arms general manager Szymon Kochanowicz was full of confidence that the newly refurbished pub could be a great success.

"The feedback we have had so far has been very positive. It is adding an extra dimension to the food places available in Marlborough," he said.

"To me the last place looked like a worn-out, outdated design but now it looks fresher and more vibrant.

"In a very short period of time we are doing pretty well. It has gone better than we expected it would, so it has been a promising start.

"I really believe in this place and that we are heading for success. I also feel that we can steal the market share in Marlborough.

"Our pies are award-winning and if you sell the right product and you believe in it, success is right around the corner.

"I am happy with the way things are going. People say that Marlborough is a tough place to get the right staff for restaurants and pubs. It can always be challenging but I am positive we are heading in the right direction."

However, The Crown in the Parade is for sale once again after Enterprise Inns put it on the market, with the asking price being quoted as £525,000 plus VAT.

This comes just a few months after the former tenants tried to run the only piano lounge the town had, but without much success.

The building's freehold is being marketed by the Bath offices of chartered surveyors James A Baker and it is being advertised as an attractive circa 19th-century Grade II listed pub with six letting rooms.

Over the last few years The Crown has changed owners and licensees several times.

Councillor Stewart Dobson said: "It is disappointing that The Crown has closed and it would be a real shame if it did not open or it did not continue as a pub.

"Conversely I feel the Wellington Arms will be a real asset for the town and can hopefully bring people into Marlborough. I really like what they have done with the place."
