A GAS leak in Frankland Road, Blagrove Industrial Estate, led to 200 people in the area being evacuated.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service was at the scene and was urging Freshbrook, Toothill and Grange Park residents to keep doors and windows closed as a precaution.

Great Western Way was shut for a time earlier but has now been reopened.

A fire service spokesman said earlier: "The leak involves a gas main, so there is a strong smell of gas in the local area, which may be an issue for people with existing respiratory problems."

Darren Keighley, Wales & West Utilities Gas Emergency Services Manager for Swindon said earlier: “We were alerted to a smell of gas in the area this morning and immediately sent a team of engineers.

"They found a third party had damaged a gas pipe, causing a leak on Blagrove Industrial Estate and are now working to repair it.

“So that the public, other road users and our team are safe while we work, Wiltshire Police closed Great Western Way in both directions - 200 people in the area have been evacuated by Dorset & Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service as a precaution."

Both Thamesdown and Stagecoach bus services were diverted while part of Great Western Way was shut.
