ENCOURAGING children to become more active, healthier and safer while travelling to school was at the heart of lessons at Holy Family Catholic Primary School yesterday.

The Marlowe Avenue school hosted a Road Safety Day to encourage pupils to use more eco-friendly ways of getting to their lessons.

To kick off the fun-filled day, the school held an active travel breakfast where any children and accompanying adult who walked, scooted or used their bikes to get school received a free bacon roll.

Teacher Amanda Thoburn spearheaded the day and said it was a great success. She said: “As a school we are trying to be healthier and more safety conscious and encourage the children to be more environmentally aware.

“The children seemed to really enjoy it and we are already planning another event to coincide with Bike It Week next term.

The day was planned to help the school achieve a Silver Travel Award with Modeshift STARS after they were awarded a bronze title last year for all their work to improve cycling, walking and other forms of sustainable travel to school.

The school encouraged pupils to wear brightly coloured clothes to make drivers more aware of them and launched a Be Bright, Be Seen competition.

Groups of Year 1 and 2 children also had the opportunity for scooter training and, at a special assembly, they heard PCSO Dean Tilling talk about personal safety.
