Swindon's Arts Centre stage was alive with colour and energy recently when the polished company Immersion Theatre performed the classic tale of Alice in Wonderland there.

The nearly full house audience, which included many young children and parents/grandparents, were in fits of giggles from the start when these five performers bounced onto the stage in their various costumes and brought life to this well loved story.

This was a truly bonkers show and we all loved it; my six year old daughter's face was alive with glee throughout the show as she found it hilarious when the different characters talked in their riddles and rhymes. (And we all know that a child's laughter is infectious.)

This musical was feel good and simple and the perfect way to spend an afternoon with my little one; there was much amusement for her age group and a few jokes chucked in for the adults too (including one of the characters having a nightmare about Donald Trump - we've all been there).

It was exciting and fast paced and three out of the five performers played more than one part - for example, the woman who played the part of the Cheshire Cat, later transformed into the fantastically bossy Queen of Hearts. Mine and my daughter's favourite performer was the woman who played Alice though - she had such a lovely voice and great stage presence.

As we followed Alice and the White Rabbit as they set off on their adventures, there were many other larger than life characters that came our way (such as Tweedle Dum, Tweedle Dee and the Mad Hatter).

This performance was just the right length; as the little ones stayed engaged throughout. The first half was 40 minutes, with a 20 minute interval, and then we had another 30 minutes. This company clearly understands how to keep children amused as there was a ball game between the stage and us and also lots of opportunities for us to shout out a catchphrase that they asked us to learn.

After the show, there was an added treat - with there being a chance for the little ones to meet the performers and have their photos taken. My daughter was too shy to do this; she just enjoyed looking at them from afar but it was lovely to see how in awe she and the other kids were of the cast.

It was hilarious, different and allowed everyone's imagination to run wild - look out for this company when they bring their next tour to Swindon.
