A DETERMINED 16-year-old is juggling revision for 20 GCSE exams with training this week in preparation of taking part in Cancer Research’s Pretty Muddy event in honour of her father and grandmother.

Kiera Grisley decided to lace up her trainers for the gruelling 5km challenge as her grandmother is battling three types of terminal cancer.

Her father was also diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma skin cancer in 2015 but is now in remission.

“My friends were talking about it and then I thought considering everything my dad and nan have gone through that I would take part,” the Lydiard Park pupil said.

“At first I wasn’t aware of how serious it was when my dad got diagnosed as I was only 14 at the time.

“I knew he had cancer but none of the details because I was so young. It was when he had an operation that I found out everything and it was quite worrying.

“When my nan got diagnosed it was a shock. I am close to her and I would always stay with her quite a lot when I was younger.”

Despite only setting a £50 target, Kiera, who faces 20 GCSE exams in the next month, has seen that figure quadruple thanks to the generous support of friends.

“Cancer Research UK is a great cause and anyone can get affected by cancer at any point in their life and the more research we can do to find a cure, the better,” she said.
