WILTSHIRE Council's office in the centre of Devizes is to close tomorrow (26) ready for services to move to the library on Tuesday.

The council announced earlier this year that it was to create a community hub at the library and close its offices in Snuff Street. It will mean that more services are available under one roof and the library's hours will be slightly extended.

John Thomson, cabinet member for hubs, said: “We see the provision of community hubs as vital for local areas. It means people can access local services and facilities and have flexible space for the community to use. It makes sense to combine the services currently provided in Snuff Street into the library.

“It’s great to see the new hub in Devizes taking shape, and I’m sure it will be just as popular and well used as the successful Calne Community Hub is. Libraries are at the heart of local communities, and the buildings provide a safe place for meetings and group use, and the new hub model will help to make this vital service sustainable into the future."

A swipe card building access scheme will start in the summer which will enable library customers, community groups and visitors to access the building outside of the opening hours of the library.

Flexible shelving will be introduced in the library area to enable the space to be used for larger meetings and events, such as the community area board meetings and local community events.
