SEVEN well-known celebrities will be in Wroughton in two weeks’ time for an exciting new show which aims to find Britain’s Greatest Invention.

The self-titled one-off will be broadcast live on BBC Two from the Science Museum on June 15 to millions of viewers across the country, featuring famous faces including broadcaster Sir Trevor McDonald, Angela Rippon, Giles Coren, Len Goodman, David Harewood, Nick Knowles and Angela Scanlon.

Each will back a different invention, making their case to the nation and exploring the remarkable history and science behind the inventions that have built the modern world.

The audience will then vote for the invention they are endorsing and see it win the title of Britain’s Greatest Invention.

Food critic and journalist Giles Coren will champion the fridge, an invention that plays a crucial role in how healthy we are, whereas train enthusiast and former Strictly Come Dancing judge Len Goodman will be an ambassador for the steam engine, reflecting his passion for trains since childhood.

Having had TB when she was a child, Angela Rippon will be an ambassador for antibiotics, which has saved more than 200 million lives since its invention, whilst for actor David Harewood, the jet engine, which keeps almost one million people in the air at any one time, is the most significant revelation of modern technology.

For Robot Wars presenter Angela Scanlon the mobile phone is the winning invention because it uses a collaboration of multiple technologies, while and for Nick Knowles, concrete is the most used material on earth and therefore deserves to win the title. Sir Trevor McDonald is backing the television as the winning invention; when growing up in Trinidad it inspired him to pursue a career in broadcasting that has spanned four decades.

The programme is being produced in partnership with The Open University . Matt Moore, head of the Science Museum at Wroughton, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for local people to visit the site and see some of the most important inventions, as voted for by the Great British public.”

Britain’s Greatest Invention will broadcast on June 15 between 8.30pm and 10pm. Viewers will be able to vote by phone or online at bbc.co.uk/invention on the night.
