TWINNING visitors from France and Germany will see many different sides of life in Wiltshire when they visit for a weekend from June 23 to celebrate 50 years of twinning.

A highlight of the visit will be when stones sent from Mayenne and Waiblingen will be unveiled on The Small Green next to the Crammer in Devizes on June 24. One stone from Devizes was unveiled on an earlier visit.

They are set to be a symbol of twinning strength. Devizes Mayor Nigel Carter said: "Many of the representatives have been friends for many years and the warmth of the hospitality extended is impressive This year, we shall be formally unveiling commemorative stones exchanged between the communities."

They will also be in town for Coun Carter's inaugural service in St John's Church on June 25. He said: "It provides another remarkable occasion for the visitors to join with us in one of our very traditional ceremonies."

The morning service will also include wreath laying in a joint act of commemoration to mark awareness of history.

The weekend will also include a trip to Poulshot Farm to talk about diversification and farming support from the EU for the twinning delegates while others take in a display of regency and morris dancing in Market Place followed by a sporting challenge at Rowdeford School organised by Devizes Budo Club.

On Saturday evening the Devizes Town Band will play in the Corn Exchange for a social supper. Sunday's social events include music and maypole dancing in Hillworth Park, a barge trip a tour of the tower of St John's Church and a tour guided by historian John Girvan.

Coun Carter said: "Discussion on the challenges of the forthcoming Brexit negotiations will, I am sure, occupy many conversations over the weekend, but will serve to create an understanding for the continuing need for close political, social and security relationships with our European friends."
