MORRIS dancers showed their flair and exuberance when a day of dance was held in Devizes on Sunday.

Morris teams from across the county as well as a group from Lewes in Sussex spent the day touring pubs in the town to the delight of onlookers.

The day, organised by Devizes Jubilee Morris, started at 10.30am with a performance in the Market Place and finished in the evening in the garden of the Southgate Inn. Among the pubs where they drew an appreciative audience was the British Lion.

Martin Brown foreman and instructor of Devizes Jubilee Morris said: "The Day of Dance is the highlight of our year, it’s our birthday party too because our first performance was at the town's Jubilee Fete in 2012. It’s also a great opportunity to meet up with our friends and perform, play music, dance and have the occasional beer."

Jubilee Morris has its roots in the group set up by Walter Rose Butchers in Devizes to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee. Team captain Paul Underwood said: "It’s five years since I suggested Walter Rose Butchers set up a Morris team to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee and look at us now. We have an active team, youngsters coming up through the side, new members and a unique style, with dances all our own.

"We welcomed our friends from Blackpowder in Lewes to our lovely home town. In July, we’re making the return visit to Lewes to dance with Blackpowder on their home turf."

Other Morris teams taking part in the fourth day of dance included Chippenham Morris, Hips & Haws clog and Rigel Junior from Rowde School, as well as Blackpowder Morris from Lewes.

A number of the groups had strutted their stuff at Chippenham Folk Festival on the late May bank holiday weekend.

Devizes Jubilee, which is made up of both men and women, perform both Cotswold and Border Morris dances. The repertoire includes sticks and hankies, with both traditional and new dances performed. New musicians and dancers are always welcome and no experience is necessary.
