POLICE were advising drivers to avoid Devizes after a lorry crashed into a house at Prison Bridge on Bath Road this morning.

It is understood that the Mike Garbutt Transport lorry has now been backed down the track along the canal but the road will be closed while recovery work takes place and gas supplies have been checked.

Police said: "Officers were called to Bath Road, at the top of Caen Hill, at approximately 10.20am today, following a report that a lorry had collided with a house.

"A road closure is due to be put in place from the top of Dunkirk Hill junction with Bath Road, and at the bottom of Caen Hill, once the gas board has attended to make the scene safe. The vehicle will then be recovered

"The fire service is currently on scene and a structural engineer is attending to assess the damage to the building.

"Thankfully, nobody has been injured.

"There are currently long delays in the area and these are expected to continue into this afternoon when the road closure is put in place."

  • After diversions through Rowde and Dunkirk Hill were put in place during recovery work, Caen Hill has been reopened this afternoon.
