BOMB disposal experts were called to a house in Eastcott this morning after the discovery of an unexploded World War Two shell.

Firefighters, police officers and a team from the Royal Logistics Corps raced to the scene in Clifton Street.

The shell was pulled out of the old canal at the bottom of Kingshill by magnet fishing enthusiasts.

They made their find last week but it was so congealed with mud and muck that it wasn't immediately obvious what it was.

It was only yesterday, after the shell had been soaked in vinegar and cleaned up, that they realised the potential danger of what they had found.

The bomb disposal team, who raced to Swindon on blue lights from their base at Tidworth, conducted an initial x-ray of the device before concluding that it was an 8lb armour piercing solid shot round.

They removed it from the property for safe disposal elsewhere.

There was no risk to the public.
