IF EVERYONE in Swindon recycled just one more can of deodorant spray, it could save enough energy to power a typical primary school for up to 78 days, the council has claimed.

The interesting find marks National Recycling Week, a nationwide campaign to urge people to think more about recycling.

The theme of the week is ‘Recycling – it’s worth it’, the aim of which is to highlight how recycling just one extra item per household can significantly reduce the total amount of waste sent to landfill.

A Swindon Borough Council spokesman said: “National initiatives such as Recycling Week are a fantastic way of increasing awareness of recycling and the Council is right behind this latest campaign.

“Recycling benefits the environment and our local community and, although we all do our bit to recycle, we can always do more.

“There are a number of items that somehow evade the recycling bin. The bathroom is often a good place to start and aerosols such as deodorants and hair sprays can be recycled again and again without any loss in quality.

“This means materials from aerosols can come back in items such as mobile phones parts, dishwashers or even as another aerosol.

“Residents who would like to recycle more and would like additional recycling boxes should call 01793 445501."
