FUTURE West End stars will take to the stage for next month’s Old Town Christmas lights switch-on.

Dancers from Swindon’s Wilkes Academy of Performing Arts will be among the raft of performers wowing the crowds at the popular November event.

The Westmead-based school has a proven track record of getting its students into the West End. Pupils have gone on to perform in Thriller Live and Mamma Mia.

Jonathan Wilkes, one of the school’s principals, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have been asked to be involved in such a great event for Old Town.

“Whilst it gives our students an opportunity to be centre-stage, we’re pleased to be performing in front of the local community too - something all the family can enjoy.”

As well as dancers from Wilkes Academy, the afternoon-long show will include performances from local musicians like Caitlin Bowles, Jim Blair and group Royal Soul.

The festivities start at 1pm on Sunday, November 26. Businesses across Old Town will be open for trade and a second entertainment stage outside the Devizes Road Art Centre will showcase local acts.

The Christmas lights will be switched on at 5pm by a hot name expected to be announced early next month.

The event is organised by the Old Town Business Association. Chairman Richard Deacon said: “Our line-up this year is looking fantastic, and I’m so pleased we could call upon our talented local community to join in.

“The switch-on event is all about bringing communities together to celebrate the countdown to Christmas with their friends and family. I’m hoping the entertainment and lights create an amazing atmosphere in Old Town, giving pleasure to residents and visitors alike.”
