VILLAGERS felt like they had just stepped into a fairytale last weekend as they wandered around Sherston for a magical scarecrow trail and Window Wonderland displays.

This year the theme Fables and Fairytales allowed families to get creative with their eye-catching designs, from the Three Little Pigs, to The Wizard of Oz and Jack and the Beanstalk.

Kirsty Strachan, Sherston Arts Festival committee member said: “Fables and Fairytales sounded like a nice way people could get involved, and children could get involved too.

“We had an absolutely fabulous turnout, running Window Wonderland at the same time.

“I think most of Sherston and the surrounding villages spent the weekend wandering the streets during the day to see the scarecrows and during the evening.

“I think it just shows what a creative community we are.

“It gives you that lovely warm feeling. You are part of such a nice community, with the whole community coming out to see the things people have built. It really does bring the community together.”

Cinderella was the winning scarecrow this year, closely followed by the Three Little Pigs and Red Riding Hood.

Many of the scarecrows featured in the trail were made by families who attended a scarecrow-making workshop to create their masterpieces.

Mrs Strachan said: “The scarecrow workshop is a good idea if you are doing anything like this, for anyone who might feel shy about making something so big.

“We got materials together and had 17 families making scarecrows and getting children involved.

“They made really beautiful scarecrows.”

The scarecrow trail was one of a series of events for Sherston Art Festival, which is running until Sunday (October 15).
