Charity cash raised in memory of Bert

HUNDREDS of pounds have been raised for charity in memory of a Trowbridge man who died after an tragic accident at a scrapyard in June.

Bert Reeves, 63, of the Studley Green estate, Trowbridge, died from head injuries after an accident involving a skip lorry at the EJ Shanley scrapyard in Green Lane.

More then 600 people, including his widow Fran and daughters Lynda and Vicky, paid their respects at his funeral on Friday July 5 at the West Wiltshire Crematorium in Semington helping to raise nearly £1,000 in donations for good causes.

Mr Reeves' son-in-law, Andrew Murchison, 43, of the Walwayne estate, said: "The family just really want to say thank you to everyone for attending and for contributing. He was a very popular man. The crematorium was packed."

On Tuesday, the family presented a cheque for £525.24 to the Wiltshire Air Ambulance, who, despite their rapid response, were unable to save Mr Reeves on June 21. A sum of £435.24 was also given to The Haemophilia Society, which supports people with the hereditary condition that impairs the body's ability to control coagulation.

His son Dean, 29, suffered from the illness and later died of cancer in 1996 because the haemophilia meant that he could not be treated properly.

Mr Reeves, who worked on and off at the scrapyard for 40 years, was airlifted to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol but died later that day from his injuries.

The father-of-three and grandfather-of-four was born, and grew up, in Trowbridge.
