Top environmentally friendly family named

THE search is over - Salisbury District Council has found the best recycling family in south Wiltshire.

As part of the council's recycling awareness campaign, the council launched a search for the area's most environmentally friendly family. And it has found them - the Freemans of Coombe Bissett.

Led by dad Simon, this family of four are positively potty about making sure everything that can be recycled is recycled.

Mum, Jo, entered her family and wrote: "My husband Simon has been very keen to do our bit. You name it, he'll recycle it.

"Re-cycled bags? We have loads of them, filled to the brim in the garage awaiting the weekend trip to the recycling depot.

"I tell him that he spends more time recycling than he does with the rest of us! He even checks the rubbish bags to make sure none of us are throwing away things that can be recycled because he can't bear it if we're missing a tin or two.

"Our girls, Claire and Katie, think their dad does a splendid job. They participate by re-cycling every day things too.

"They are very good at not wasting paper and choose to use old school exercise books instead of buying new ones to write on."

For being chosen as the best recycling family in south Wiltshire, the Freemans have won six months free membership to one of the council's leisure centres.

Leader of the council, Councillor Paul Sample judged the competition entries. He said: "We wanted to hold this competition to highlight the excellent examples of recycling that are already taking place.

"The Freemans are an example to us all. The enthusiasm in which they all recycle came across loud and clear and I hope they prove to be an inspiration to all families."

Currently, 23 per cent of all waste collected in the district is recycled. The council has been set a target of recycling 40 per cent of its waste by 2010.

Even though residents in south Wiltshire are already recycling 40 tonnes daily, we still send over 130 tonnes of rubbish to landfill each day. The council estimates that a further 50 tonnes per day could easily be recycled.
