AN OLD Town cut through will be shut for a week to allow speed restriction signs to be installed.
Borough council traffic officers want to close Mill Lane, which runs between Westlecot Road and Foxham Way, from March 1-7. The road will be reopened on Saturday, March 3 and Sunday, March 4.
The closure – between Field Rise and Foxham Way - will enable the introduction of a new 30mph speed limit along the country lane. Currently, a national speed limit is in place – with cars able to drive at up to 60mph along the winding road.
The change – which will see the speed limit halved – was proposed by borough traffic officers “in the interests of road safety”.
Ward councillor Nadine Watts welcomed the plans: “I think it makes sense to introduce a 30mph speed limit between the existing 20mph limits at either end of Mill Lane. It is a winding route used by cyclists and horse riders, as well as vehicles.”
Residents who fear that they will have “difficulties” during the planned road closure next month – for example, requiring access for a hospital appointment – have been asked to contact borough council traffic engineer Kevin Hyde.
He can be contacted on 01793 466745 or khyde@swindon.gov.uk.
