SWINDON
1952:
The main entrance to the new Penhill Housing Estate was discussed at a Minister of Local Government and Planning inquiry at the Civic Offices. The debate was whether is should be on Cricklade Road or through Crosslands Avenue. The inquire heard that four people objected to the compulsory purchase of their land in Cricklade Road by Swindon Town Council.
1962: Paul Henry, promoter of Club 60 in Swindon, was hoping for a record crowd when legendary sax player Ronnie Scott appeared. But instead it was one of the poorest turn outs in recent times, with just 150 people attending. Scott was backed by the Club 60 group and performed East of the Sun and I’ll Remember April.
1972: There was shock news from the Department of Employment when it was revealed that the number of people laid off today in North Wiltshire stood at about 13,000. That figure did not inlcude the 2,500 who were already unemployed. About 39 firms in the Swindon area fed figures into the Swindon Employment Exchange “tally book”. While the figure is high, it is inflated by the fact that many industries working a three-day week do not function in the main on a Monday.
