FLYING debris smashed through a car windscreen and struck a driver in the head, causing him to be rushed to hospital during a mystery incident being investigated by police.

The driver, a man in his 50s, was about 1km from the Beckhampton roundabout having come from Devizes on the A361 when the shock incident took place.

The metal hook flew into the windscreen, cracking the glass and striking him on the head. He was taken to Great Western Hospital for treatment.

The item has been described as a metal hook but it is not known whether it flew off the back of another car or was thrown up from the carriageway and through the windscreen of the silver Nissan Leaf.

Police want to hear from anyone who might have dash cam footage of the incident which took place on March 14 at 4pm.

PC Ben Cox, of the Roads Policing Unit, said: “It is not known if this hook came from another vehicle, or if it has been thrown up from the carriageway by another vehicle, and into the windscreen of the victim’s car.

“We’d like to hear from anyone who may have been driving along this stretch of road around this time, especially anyone who may have dash cam footage.”

Anyone who can help the investigation should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
