PLANS have been put forward to have a beer garden and a roof terrace built at the Albany Palace pub in Trowbridge.

JD Wetherspoon Ltd want to bolster the pub, by Trowbridge Town park, to create a beer garden in an enclosed ground floor courtyard and a roof terrace on the floor above.

In the national chain's design statement it says it will not change the outside look of the building but a lot of changes will take with the existing space it has.

With the beer garden, Wetherspoon says it wants to utilise all of the space it has by the side of the pub, which is currently used for deliveries and storage of beer barrels, but the rest of the space is unused.

The appearance will be transformed, with fixed planted pergolas, soft and hard landscaping, low level amenity and decorative lighting.

The surface will be paved with durable external materials fit for purpose - there will be no amplified music in this area. The beer garden will be created with a ramped access available to disabled people and wheelchair users.

With the roof terrace, the current area is almost completely taken up by to the existing mechanical plant, cooling and odour control equipment.

Wetherspoon says that recent advances in this equipment means that the space requirements for these have radically reduced.

A greater use of packaged systems also means that some equipment can be housed inside. The applicant says there is sufficient space on the existing roof to move this and use it for customers.

Access to this bit will be up the stairs in the pub through a new set of double doors. The existing CCTV system will be extended to the new terrace area, which will be enclosed with glass screens of at least 1.55m.

The current bar in the pub will be replaced with a new larger one as Wetherspoon says it is not big enough as part of the plans.

The design report also says that existing windows, key stones and stone arches in brick surrounds are almost wholly intact and where services are removed they will be repaired with reclaimed facing brick to

match existing using jointing in lime rich mortar.
