MELKSHAM Town chairman Darren Perrin says the club have taken another step in the right direction after unveiling the largest LED scoreboard outside of England’s top two divisions at Oakfields.

The screen, lit by 54,000 LED lights but using less power than a hairdryer, measures up at 21ft long and seven foot high, and has been provided to the club by local company INFiLED free of charge and was switched on on Tuesday evening.

During the unveiling, the Toolstation League Premier Division side also announced that their home, Oakfields, will now be known as the INFiLED Arena from Sunday, July 1.

Perrin, who revealed he has been in discussions with the technology company for over a year, praised the company for the time and effort they had put in to the project, as well as the screen itself.

“We are so indebted to INFiLED, in particular to CEO David Da Costa and his son Ben. They have been unbelievable to us,” he said.

“Their team are fantastic. We have been very fortunate that they have set up business in Melksham and that they wanted to showcase a scoreboard at our club.

“It cost us nothing and it is truly amazing. It’s a great opportunity for companies to join us and get some good advertising on there.

“We have already had a bit of interest about it so hopefully, we can get plenty more.

“As a football club, we cannot thank INFiLED enough for what they have done for us, they have been absolutely magnificent from start to finish. It’s been a pleasure to work with them.”

The club plan to use the screen for all manner of events, including World Cup streams, as they look to maximise the club’s revenue.

“We have been given a brand-new state of the art electronic scoreboard and it is the biggest LED scoreboard outside of the Premier League and Championship,” he said.

“Obviously it opens so many opportunities for advertising and sponsorship for us as a football club, it also gives us the chance to stream the World Cup off of it.

“In the summer we will be able to use it for that. It will also give us the possibility of showing golf and scores on there as well.

“It’s been in the pipeline for about a year, that is how long we have been in discussions with them and we have been very patient.”

Melksham were 3-0 winners at Bridgwater Town on Saturday, with Gary Higdon scoring once and recent signing Jon Davies making it three goals in two games thanks to his brace.

Town host the Somerset side in the reverse fixture tonight (Thursday, 7.30pm).
