DEVIZES Town put in a five-star showing away to Malmesbury Victoria on Tuesday night as they completed a comprehensive win over the home side.

After losing 5-2 at home to Cheddar last Thursday, manager Darran Walters was delighted to see his team respond with a 5-1 success at the Flying Monk ground.

Matthew Russell and Tom Slater were on target last week, Slater making it two in two on Tuesday night, as Jamie Walters and Rory Collins also struck, while Jack Hopper grabbed a brace.

The defeat was a second in a row for the Vics, who were thumped 7-0 by Oldland Abbotonians on Saturday.

“It was a great team performance, especially after the heavy defeat to Cheddar,” said Walters.

“It was good to get back to a good performance and a decent scoreline.

“We started the game well and scored really early. We got the first goal, they equalised but in the second half we started really well again and scored a couple of goals.

“That sealed the game for us early doors. We were nice and solid at the back, good in midfield and we look dangerous up front all night so I was really pleased.

“We are trying to get into the top six, that is our target for the season.”

Devizes were due back out again this evening, travelling to Wincanton Town and while Walters admits the schedule is less than ideal, he acknowledges it is the same for the majority of the league.

“Physically and mentally it’s tough because it has been a long season,” he added.

“The games are coming thick and fast so we will have to rotate the squad a little bit to keep it as fresh as we can.

“We have a couple of forced changes but we have a good squad at the moment and that gives us good options.

“We have had so many games called off, I think everyone is just trying to play catch up.”

Elsewhere on Saturday, Corsham Town picked up their ninth win of the season as they eased their relegation concerns with a 2-1 victory at Bishops Lydeard.

After trailing 1-0 for the majority of the game, Jamie Harrison’s side burst into life late on when Chay Forrester notched an equaliser, before Matt Purdy fired home in injury time to snatch a win.

Calne Town were unable to convert a half-time lead into three points, as Will Thomson’s 20th-minute strike was cancelled out by a quick-fire double from Chard Town, who won 2-1 at home.

n PEWSEY Vale shared a 3-3 draw with Cheltenham Saracens in Hellenic League Division One West on Saturday.

Vale were 2-1 up at half-time, but trailed 3-2 on 70 minutes before Josh Fowler's second of the game restored parity. Fowler's penalty and Ethan Fishlock accounted for the other strikes.
