At around 2:50pm last Saturday Swindon celebrated the heroes of 1993 and their promotion to the Premier League by parading members of that great side on the County Ground pitch.

But by 4:55pm the Town faithful were booing off the underachievers of 2018 as Town’s playoff hopes came to a predictable end.

After needing to take at least 10 points from our six games in April to have a chance of a playoff spot in May, Phil Brown’s side have collected a measly three points with one game left this month, a pathetic return for a squad supposedly built to earn promotion.

The biggest insult coming last weekend when the Swindon XI on the pitch put on a dreadful 2nd half display, clearly telling the fans that the majority had down tools for the rest of the season.

Thankfully there were a few exceptions, one being another talented youth team product making their debut, Joe Romanski.

Due to injuries and suspensions the young centre-back was given the nod by Phil Brown, and took his chance well putting in a solid display, Joe’s debut also made him the first player born this century to play for Swindon Town.

With Town remaining a member of League Two for one more year thoughts now turn to who will be sticking around for next season on the pitch.

Despite our biggest weakness this season being at the back I feel we have a great defensive partnership already in place at the club for 2018/19.

Both Dion Conroy and Matt Preston have shown what they can do in a Town shirt over their respective times at the club, and I feel together they would be a solid foundation a new manager could build on.

Conroy has another year left on his deal, so let’s hope Preston signs a new contract this summer to keep him around to make this partnership a reality.

But we know any contract talks for players can’t start until a decision is made over the manager, as I said last week I don’t think Phil Brown is the right man, I would go back to appointing a recently retired pro with an experienced assistant. A name fans can get excited about and fully support going into next season.
