House prices too high

The young generation in Britain are being robbed every day by high house prices and rents.

House prices are far too high. The young cant afford to rent or buy.

Lord Willetts, chairman of the Resolution Foundation, is concerned that eventually the young generation will become angry about the housing crisis. The Resolution Foundation has considered various way to solve the problem and has come up with the idea of giving all young people £10,000 towards the deposit on a house.

Unfortunately the laws of supply and demand mean that house prices and rents would just rise to take account of this additional money floating around in the economy.

Only by building more council houses for the young generation can the housing crisis be solved. Giving all young people £10,000 would just push up house prices and make the problem worse.

Stop seeking glory

Swindon Borough Council has had plenty of practice portraying failure as success but is there anyone who is naïve enough to fall for the latest flannel ‘Let’s all celebrate what we achieved’ (SA May 7).

Despite failing to secure a £12m Heritage Lottery Fund for the proposed new museum the director of Swindon’s Museum & Art Gallery, Rod Hebden, said “we should celebrate everything that’s been achieved”.

The previous director of the museum Hadrian Ellory-van-Dekker stepped down a year ago. A cynic might say he saw the writing on the wall.

Support for this project was divided. Objections to it were so strong that a petition of more than 2,500 signatures was presented to the council. The problem is, common sense solutions and listening to public opinion are alien concepts for Swindon Borough Council.

Civic leaders should stop attempting to seek glory with vanity projects and start to concentrate on getting basic service provision right.

Made-up conditions

Oh my word, I do agree with the thoughts of Roger Lack about children in schools who have, in our opinion, ‘made-up conditions’ whereby they know it is okay to misbehave.

The do-gooders who dreamt up these conditions some years ago are to blame. As Roger said, these conditions did not manifest itself in our time.

What has manifested itself these days days is a condition called ‘Lack of Parenting Skills’ whereby children are actually suffering from ‘Out of Control Syndrome’ as well.

We see it in abundance every day in restaurants, pubs, shops, etc whereby the ‘ABCDEF’ conditions are the excuse offered due to children needing to ‘Express Themselves’!

It’s up to parents to ‘Express Themselves’ and take control of these made up maladies!
