THIS incredible footage shows a spectacular birds-eye view of the newly-upgraded Junction 16 roundabout.

The multimillion-pound remodelling appears to have paid off, as dozens of vehicles flow smoothly in and out of Swindon and Royal Wootton Bassett from the M4 without any issues.

Jake Silvester, a 21-year-old ceiling fitter, captured half an hour of busy traffic with his drone, then compressed it into a three-minute time-lapse video.

He said: "A lot of people are talking about the roundabout at the moment, so I thought it might look interesting from the air.

"It was a lovely day to do it, the sun was shining and everything was crystal-clear.

"The drone I used for this time-lapse cost £3,000 - the quality of the footage is really good.

"I've done a time-lapse of Greenbridge roundabout before, that was for a job, but this one was in my leisure time on Sunday evening.

Jake set up a part-time business in August, Silvester Drone Services, which he hopes to one day turn into a full-time job and even branch out around the country.

He added: "I've done car park surveys, ceiling inspections, anything where the company can use a drone instead of setting up an expensive scaffold.

"I bought a drone two years ago, then I got a licence for it and started advertising my new business.

"It's a very weather dependent job, but it's going well, and really picking up now that summer's almost here."

Over 17 months, 200,000 man hours were spent on upgrading the Junction 16 roundabout.

Changes to the junction included a dedicated right turn from Royal Wootton Bassett towards Wroughton, extra lanes on approach roads, wider motorway slip roads, improved drainage and new traffic signals.

Adver readers have complained as they struggled to get to grips with the new lights and layout, which they claim caused more delays than the previous layout.

However, other readers found the new layout easy to use with clearer signage and road markings, which appears to have improved the flow of traffic.

The scheme was funded by Swindon and Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership and the Wichelstowe Joint Venture.

It was delivered by Swindon Borough Council in partnership with Highways England and Wiltshire Council.

The motorway junction redesign was a requirement of the outline planning permission for the major housing development at nearby Wichelstowe and needed to be complete before the 1,100th property on the site is occupied.

Around 5,000 vehicles use the junction every hour at peak times in the morning and evening, and this is expected to rise by more than 50 per cent in the next few years.
