ENGINEERS at the Honda factory in Swindon have caused a storm after building the fasted pickup truck in the UK.

The stylish red pickup was made by modifying a Honda Civic Type R and was unveiled at the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) test day.

It is being touted as one of the fasted pick up on UK roads. Although it is only a concept car and will not go into commercial production.

Project Leader Alyn James told the Adver: "It was just a project between the factory and Honda UK to see what ideas we can come up with and what toys we can play with.

"We wanted to show the engineering skills that we've got in the factory. We just wanted to give them bit of freedom to see what they could create.

It took just under four weeks for the team of 12 engineers to modify the Type R in their spare time, including having to print out some of the components.

"We've used the 3D printer available to us at the factory, some of the parts that we needed we can print them first to check if they fit before we go and make them in aluminium or steel," said Alyn.

Phil Webb, head of car at Honda UK, added: "This Civic Type R Pickup Truck concept by the special team at our Swindon-based plant demonstrates the passion and commitment of the team there – going above and beyond outside working hours to deliver the final product.

"There are no plans to put this in to production but we will be using it to transport our lawn and garden products as and when required!"

The pick-up space in the back is designed to be able to load heavyweight items such as lawn mowers and motorbikes. The car is capable of more than 165mph and a 0-62mph sprint time in less than six seconds.
