A TEAM of rowers who wore colourful costumes during the weekend's Dragon Boat Festival won a prize for their efforts.

The Wonderbees dressed up as superheroes, Ninja Turtles, the Mario brothers, the Flintstones, Shrek, and the Scooby Doo gang when they took part in the race.

Though they narrowly missed out on making it through to the final, they were rewarded with the Best Fancy Dress title.

The award came with an extra £100 for their chosen charities - Prospect Hospice and the Down's Syndrome Group.

Peter Browne, 51, dressed up as Velma.

He said: "Lots of people from fitness clubs come to the race to win and take it very seriously but we just wanted to have a laugh.

"This is our second year at the festival and the Swindon Phoenix Rotary Club gave us the Best Fancy Dress prize last year too.

"The race lasted just over a minute but it was really intense exercise.

"It was tough and we're really proud of our performance.

"We never expected to win the race, it was all about raising money for two amazing charities."

So far, they've raised £190.
