OLYMPIC silver medalist Shelley Rudman is used to enjoying many moments of sporting glory but one of proudest moments ever came in Bishops Cannings on Saturday when her daughter won the girls' title in a 5,000 metre dash.

Ms Rudman took to Twitter to express her delight when Ella Rudman-Bromley, ten, won her class in the Bishops Cannings race 27 years after her mum took the same title.

Organiser Frankie Goddard was delighted with the turnout for the race which is held as part of the church fete in the village near Devizes. He was pleased that there were many familiar faces in the line-up including overall winner Simon Nott who set a new course record when recording his ninth victory in the run in 17mins 54 secs.

He said Ella's win meant it was the first time in the races 36 year history that a mother and daughter have won the same class in a race..

Mr Goddard said: "A total of 100 runners took off in this Bastille Day event in warm but excellent conditions. Eight times previous overall winner and twice first veteran Mark Anderson was also taking part running the event for his 25th time.

"Every runner received the special medal designed for the event and we where very fortunate to have Olympic medalist and World Champion Shelly Rudman present the winners cups.

"One of the great aspects of the run is for so many old friends and competitors to meet again and talk of the races they have run against one and other over the years, a strong feeling of comradeship spread throughout the event.

"The Bishops Cannings 5000m Dash must surely now deserve to be called the most challenging and friendly race over some 5000m in Wiltshire."

The sunshine meant that the church fete was also well attended with stalls and sideshows for all the family.
