HAVING just returned from a visit to my partner's native France, I am appreciating just how much choice British plant-eaters have. While the French certainly have plenty to teach us when it comes to markets piled high with superb locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables (a feast for the eyes as well as the belly) most of Brittany's culinary treats (flans, pastries, galette and crepes) rely heavily on eggs and dairy. I'm new enough to a plant food diet that it took some will power to resist all those crepes, scattered with cheese or piled with cream and chocolate, as well as the fragrant, glossy golden croissants piled at the bakery. I know many vegans who say they've found their new diet easy, but a visit to France surely puts my will power to the test!

Fortunately, a host of vegan goodies are making their way onto the market in the UK, as more of us are embracing a plant-eating lifestyle - whether we're going the whole hog (ahem) or cutting back on meat and dairy consumption. It was with a sense of relief I came home to the prospect of a vegan pizza - a Smokin' Vegan stone-baked, hand-topped pizza made with olives, tomatoes, spinach and smoky mozzarisella. There's none of this cauliflower pizza base nonsense - it's a proper flour blend (though incidentally also gluten-free) topped with what White Rabbit describe as the finest Greek olives, baby spinach and chopped Sicilian tomatoes perched on clouds of subtly smoky vegan cheese.

This all sounds good - and indeed it is a pleasure to eat. The Smokin' Vegan tastes much like the real thing, with a thin, crispy base and fresh ingredients. The vegan cheese is good too. It's a bit salty for my taste but serve a slice or two with a fresh green salad and some tomatoes, and it's fine.

The White Rabbit Pizza Company has a second vegan option, called Viva La Vegan, which they modestly bill as the holy grail of free-from pizza - claiming it's super tasty while being free-from gluten, meat and dairy, using the finest vegan cheese, vegan pesto and sun-dried tomatoes. I would certainly give it a try, maybe adding a free extra fresh vegetable toppings too.

The White Rabbit Smokin' Vegan is £5 in Sainsbury's, expensive compared to their own-brand pizzas, but comparable to the Pizza Express pizzas sold in the supermarket, which are also £5 for a smaller pizza. Not bad for an occasional treat.
