CARS built in Swindon are among the best for passing their first MOTs.

Two models, the CR-V and the Jazz, are in the top 10 of models which sail through their first tests.

And even though production of the supermini Jazz has ceased at the South Marston plant, it’s those models which come out top of the latest figures showing which vehicles are likely to pass or fail the legally required test of roadworthiness.

Fully 93.3 per cent of the cars passed their first test last year – and those cars would have been made just before production of the Jazz was moved away from Swindon, because new cars are not required to have a test until three years after being sold.

Workers at the Honda in Swindon also make the CR-V compact sports utility model.

And their skill is shown by that model also being in the top ten of best passers - coming in fifth on the list with a 90.2 per cent success rate.

Between the two Swindon-made cars are two luxury Audi models, the TT and the Q3, and the Vauxhall Mokka.

Also in the top ten are the VW Tiguan, Toyota RAV-4, the Toyota Auris, the Vauxhall Meriva and the Toyota Yaris.

At the bottom of the pile is the Renault Megane people carrier. A quarter of its models fail the MOT just three years after rolling off the production line.

Equally poor is the Ford Galaxy, with a 25.1 per cent failure rate, while the Citroen C4, Vauxhall Corsa and the Fiat Punto making up the bottom five.

Jason Smith, Director at Honda of the UK Manufacturing Ltd said: “This recognition demonstrates the high quality of our vehicles and is a testament to the hard work and ability of all our associates at the Swindon-based plant.”

This is not the first time Swindon-built Hondas have excelled in MOT statistics.

When TootCompare compiled statistics in 2013, the Jazz was second in the highest pass rates for first tests, with 90.4 per cent of cars passing, of 15,441 tested. Only the Toyota IQ was able to better it, passing 91.8 per cent of tests.

The Jazz superminis were produced at the Swindon plant between 2009 and 2014, when production was returned to Japan.

The very popular Civic hatchback has been made there since 1994 and the CR-V since the turn of the century.
