ATHLETES tackling a new test of stamina at Lydiard Park next month will be running to raise cash for animals.

The Last One Running, launched by the RSPCA’s North Wiltshire branch will challenge them to finish as many laps of a two-mile course around the beauty spot as they can, with the time allowed for each circuit cut by a minute.

Runners who don’t make the bleep test-style targets will retire until there is only the last man and woman at the start line to finish the competition. They will be declared the winners.

“We are really excited about this race,” said organiser Katie North. “The short course format means it's suitable for more leisurely joggers.

"But it will also really test the more serious crowd, with potential for the last ones running to complete distances over a marathon.

“It's also going to be a brilliant spectator event with a cafe and playground on-site making it a great day out for the whole family.”

The winning male and female athletes will take home £100 in cash provided by event sponsors Enterprise Works.

Katie added: “We are very grateful to have EW on board as our race sponsor.

"The work they do providing training and career opportunities for the disadvantaged is really wonderful and we hope our partnership continues well into the future.”

Entries for the Last One Running, which is being staged on August 19, are available online now at rspcanorthwilts.org.uk and registration on the day open from 10.00am.

All proceeds will go to RSPCA North Wiltshire, supporting the work it does providing care for animals in need across the area.

Organisers are also hoping to recruit volunteers to help on the day with tasks like marshalling and staffing the registration table.

Anyone interested in helping out on the day can contact the branch at fundraising@rspcanorthwilts.org.uk for more details.

The race starts at 11.30am with runners champing at the bit in the holding area. They will have 25 minutes to complete the first loop around the park and only those who make it back to back the start within the time will be allowed to carry on.

Enterprise Works, which started as a timber workshop, provides employment opportunities to people with mental and physical difficulties.

It now supplies quality joinery, signs and displays as well as supporting the Mens Shed movement.
