PATIENTS were left on beds in corridors at the Great Western Hospital in the emergency department.

Charlotte Radley took her grandma Mary to the hospital on Saturday at 9am with a suspected stroke. She was still waiting seven hours later to be put on a ward upstairs.

Charlotte showed the Adver a picture of patients in their beds in corridors of the emergency department.

She said: “It’s a disgrace that patients have to go through something this degrading when they are in enough pain as it is. How can this sort of treatment be allowed?”

A spokesperson for the Great Western Hospital said: “Ensuring patients receive safe and timely care is our number one priority and during busy periods we focus on making sure patient flow is at its optimal level.
“This means utilising all space available as we either discharge or move patients on to other appropriate wards.

“We see all patients in order of clinical need and, while this can sometimes mean people have to wait longer than we would like, it does allow our busy teams to care for all patients effectively including the most sick, many of whom will have a life-threatening illness or injury.

“We’d like to reassure everyone that our staff, who continue to do amazing work on a daily basis are working tirelessly to ensure the best care for all patients at all times.”
