A MUM called the police to report a crash, but ended up finding herself in the dock on a drink driving charge.

Police were called to Royal Wootton Bassett High Street around 3.30pm on August 15 after another car bumped into Margaretta Kyprianides’ Ford Focus convertible.

Swindon Magistrates’ Court heard 52-year-old Kyprianides called police to report the prang, which happened after she was forced to brake suddenly.

A roadside breathalyser test showed she was over the drink drive limit. Another test at the police station revealed Kyprianides had 65 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, almost twice the limit.

Pauline Lambert, prosecuting, said: “Mrs Kyprianides was interviewed. She said she’d been drinking the night before. Cleaning up the next morning there was an unfinished glass [of wine]. She thought she would be fine to drive.”

She got behind the wheel several hours’ later to take her daughter to the gym.

Magistrates heard Kyprianides was absolutely devastated at finding herself in court. The school worker, who lives in Bradenstoke, would struggle to get to work without a car as a lack of pavements meant the village was essentially cut off for walkers.

Banning Kyprianides from driving for 17 months, chairman of the bench Helen Pritchard said: “It’s really important you are not tempted for whatever reason, even for a short distance, to drive.”

She was fined £207 and ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £30 victim surcharge.
