PEATMOOR Angling Club is hoping to land a big catch for the Radiotherapy Appeal at a charity fishing match.

The club, based on Peatmoor Lagoon, has held the Mike Greening Memorial match every year to remember the club’s former secretary and raise money for a chosen charity.

But with the Radiotherapy Appeal nearing its target, club member Paul Jackson suggested this year they do their bit for Brighter Futures.

“I bet there’s not any of us in Swindon that doesn’t know somebody that has had to travel to Oxford,” said Paul.

“I really think as a big town we’ve got to get that into Swindon.

"Some of my friends have had to travel to Oxford for three months at a time having lots of therapy.

“Oxford isn’t that far, but it can take you an hour and a half each way for only ten minutes treatment.”

On the day, those taking part will have five hours to pull as many fish out of the lake.

There will be raffle prizes donated from local companies, Intel, Barnes Coaches, and Elm Tree Motor Co, including bottles of champagne and fishing accessories from Talisman Angling Adventures and Angling Direct.

“We’ve already got 25 bookings for people to already come, so it looks very popular,” Paul told the Advertiser.

“It’s quite good, more prizes are coming in each day.

"I’m hoping that we’re going to raise at least £600 for the charity.

“There’s a good head of bream in the lake, and they can grow up to 10 or 12lbs – we normally get three or four pound ones on average.

“But if we get lucky it could total 30lb to 40lbs.

“For the person that wins they have the chance of winning a little over £100 as well, and that’s not bad for a morning’s work.

“If the rain keeps off, we'll have a good day socialising and fishing and partake in a quick drink after.

“Some will be happy and some will be disappointed, but it’s the taking part that counts.

“There’s a lot of people in Swindon that do fish, we’ve got Peatmoor, the lakes at Wichelstowe, Coate Water,” he said.

“There are so many, and if anyone if ever out there on a Sunday they will see so many people out there enjoying their sport.”

Anglers taking part are asked to meet at 8.30am at the Woodlands Edge pub next to Peatmoor Lagoon on September 30.

Peg numbers will then be drawn at random before fishing begins in earnest at 10am.

Rods will be packed away after a 3pm finish.

A pitch will cost £15 and can be booked through Paul Jackson or Mike Davis at Peatmore Angling Club.

The club holds regular matches every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.
