THE council wants to hear from you as it seeks to update its Parking Standards document.

People are being asked to complete a questionnaire relating to travel patterns that will help officers understand the town’s car parking needs.

The existing Parking Standards document dates from 2007 and the Swindon Borough Council is updating it.

The aim is to ensure that car parking provision across Swindon, and for new developments in particular, is fit for purpose.

Councillor Gary Sumner, cabinet member for strategic planning, said: “It’s vitally important to find the right balance between the need to keep parked cars off the road and the need for people to have safe places to park.

“The new document will attempt to find that balance and I would encourage everybody to take part in the questionnaire, which will help our officers to ensure the new document is the best it can be.”

The council requires all new developments – from house extensions to new residential estates, shopping centres and offices – to make adequate provision for car parking, so that on-road parking is avoided.

The questionnaire will be available to complete until 5pm on Saturday, October 20.

To complete the online survey you will need to register for an account on the council’s planning policy consultation portal.

If you do not wish to use the consultation portal, you can download a PDF copy of the survey under ‘supporting documents’ below and email it to forwardplanning@swindon.gov.uk or post it to Planning Policy, 5th Floor Wat Tyler West, Swindon Borough Council, Beckhampton Street SN1 2JG.
