HUNDREDS of families filled the Guildhall Square last Thursday for the start of the festive season.
The Christmas lights switch-on marked the first late night shopping Thursday in the lead up to Christmas and there was plenty going on to please the crowd.
The evening started with the special Christmas Lights service at Salisbury Cathedral, followed by carol singing in the Guildhall Square.
Butcher Row was full of seasonal goodies and Christmas freebies from stores like Coffeemocha, Whittard of Chelsea, Reeves and Suzettes and there was an ice rink, face painting and balloon modelling to delight all the family.
The event was compered by Spire FM's breakfast DJ Chris Ewington and on the stage children's entertainers Ticklish Allsorts and singing group En Masse entertained the packed Guildhall Square and even Santa made an appearance.
Spire FM competition winner, 12-year-old Emma Andrews, had the pleasure of dropping the plunger to turn on the lights.
This year, as well as the tree and lights all around the city centre, there is a canopy of stars above the Market Square.
The popular lights switch-on ceremony this year also included fake snow blowing off the Guildhall while fireworks added to the festivities.
