That's another fine mess you've gotten us out of

THREE disused shopping trolleys were piled high with rubbish after a clean-up day at Westlea Park.

Graffiti on a fence was also painted over as a team of volunteers blitzed the area on Saturday.

Swindon councillor Mary Martin, Deputy Mayor Steve Wakefield (both Con, Toothill and Westlea) and Robert Buckland, the Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for South Swindon, joined a handful of residents during a cold and wet day.

But the bad weather was not enough to dampen anyone's spirits.

"We were all cold and wet but it went very well - a great success," said Mr Buckland.

"This was our promise to residents to come back and lend a hand and it's about action, not words. It's important to get out there and do something positive.

"We are getting our hands dirty and making a real change for residents."

One of the residents who helped out was 42-year-old Will Bradfield from Grange Park.

He said: "I'm surprised by how much rubbish there is but at the same time I'm not as I realise fly-tipping goes on.

"It's a shame the park is spoilt by the minority.

"It's a little frustrating, as I was involved in the last clean-up, when you see more graffiti on the fences than when we painted them over last time.

"It's important to look out for the wildlife and make it a more pleasant park for the community."

The last green action day in August was organised after complaints of drug-taking in the play area. It saw 26 people fill 24 bags of rubbish.

At the time wooden fences were repainted and graffiti was removed from the play area.

Why aren't the scum on community orders doing this sort of work?

Pav, Swindon says...
10:11am Mon 10 Dec 07

Because Grumpy, that would infringe on their human rights.

Remember, the kids who do the graffiti and dump shopping trolleys into rivers are the real victims. Victims of a society that doesn't care.

Well done to these folks by the way, for getting off their **** and cleaning up the area where they live.

I don't see many Labour Councilors or prospective MP's getting their hands dirty.

They are probably far to busy spoiling the country in other ways.

Yes Donkey I think you've shot yourself in the foot by trying to turn this into a party political issue.

Your comment has only served to higjlight the sheer lack of any Labour members' involvement.

These guys have done a good job, we should congratulate them.

There was probably only so much that the volunteers could do in the time they had.

Are you going to go back and try and clean some of the graffiti off yourself then Swinetown?

I'm sure someone with your community spirit wouldn't need to wait for a group of volunteers for you to do your bit.

I do my bit everyday (without the photoshoot)thankyou. I agree in the two hours they spent there, there wasn't much they could do.

Why has the three letter word **** which is the alternative name for a domesticated Donkey or a person who is being stupid or foolish been censored with four asterisks which indicates a slang swear word used to describe someone's derriere?

Hello Everyone, I'm surprised to collect such hatred from my fellow contributors on here today?

I will say that this was a 'Conservative Councillors in West Swindon' initiative as a form of publicity and the Adver just happened to be thereabouts at the right time!!!

Labour Councillors, you will find, have in the recent past and will in the near future, do an identical job of work in their areas, only that if they contacted the Swindon Advertiser about it, the neswpaper would respond with the words ... 'SO WHAT!'

As my previous posts were ignored I will state them again. Why is there still loads of Graffitti in Westlea Park today? Why was the clean-up less than 2 hours long? Why did everyone scarper once the photoshoot was over?

Am I the only person who cares about Westlea on this board without politics coming into it?

Seems to me all the replies so far have been political point scoring: very sad indeed. You'd get more respect for actually doing something ( I don't mean a 2 hour photoshoot either).

Answer for SwindonBorn, no I am not a Labour Councillor, I am an ex-Labour Party member as it happens. The thing is, I am also Swindon born and have lived here all my life, and the local newspaper has always been pro Conservative. I do not like to read absolute garbage stories about how marvellous it is for Conservative members to go and do a little clearing up in a stream. This, especially, because the same opportunity was/is not offered to the other political parties when they choose to 'do their bit' for the community.

Stage managed news is always a non event and I am telling it as it is regardless of what wording those certain correspondents insult me with on here.

Incidentally, SwindonBorn, are you a Conservative Councillor? I doubt it because very few, if any are 'Swindon Born'?

That's a very good question.

In one of your earlier posts you said that you were about to join them when they 'scarpered'. Being such a community spirited person, I'm sure that wouldn't have stopped you from doing your bit.......How long did you stay on Saturday to try and clean it up?

Donkey, Swindon has grown exponentially over the last 20 years or so, it is therefore not only necessary but, in my opinion, very welcome to see non Swindon-born people involved in local politics.

Thsi is regardless of their political views.

Are you saying that anyone not born in Swindon should leave the running of the town to the likes of you?

Regarding the last paragraph ... Not at all, Buster, it was a question to SwindonBorn about his political stance since he asked for mine. Then, 'writing aloud', I described the scenario which apparently exists in Swindon, newcomers want to change the place into some kind of model of whence they came, so they become Conservative Councillors, perhaps?

I did read your other reply and would summarise them as having criticised these people for not spending long enough, leaving some of the graffiti and for having photographs taken before they left.

I respect the fact that you take part in other activities, but does that give you the right to pour scorn on what these people have done?

swinetown, london says...

I'm not pouring scorn on what they have done. Just asking what exactly it is that they have done on Saturday, as myself and us local residents haven't noticed any difference whastsoever!

The last two comments highlight why the good people of Swindon simply give up. What's the point in trying to make a difference when even voluntary efforts are treated in this way by the apathetic people of Swindon. People who probably spend their weekends watching the X factor.

Swinetown ignore the dog who didn't6 get his bone: in the same way he ignored your questions: where was he on saturday? watching the X Factor.

Pathetic "voluntary efforts" deserve to be treated in such a way. Adver reported "clean up day" Clean up 15 mins for photoshoot more like it. Buster go to dog training classes and come back when you can pee and poo on a lampost in Westlea park AND (clean up after yourself) then and only then should you comment on an area you know nothing about.

Wow Swinetown, 4 posts in a row directed at me. I do seem to have ruffled your feathers don;t I. You can huff and puff as much as you like, but you are still just one of those people that put down the efforts of others. That is a real shame. Whay not accept that these people tried to make a positive difference, that should be welcomed. The fact that this area is a mess isn't their fault. You just need to accept that.

Mavis you really do seem to have lost the plot.

So Westlea park is looking a mess, whose fault is that then? how does the 2 hours of effort put in by these people make them responsible for the state of the park today?

If you had read and UNDERSTOOD my comments on here, you will have seen that I was commenting on those people that were putting down the efforts made by others, not the state of the park. Yes it is a mess, but perhaps you should accept that it may, just may, be a little less messy thanks to the efforts made by these volunteers.

At the end of the day, these people gave up their time to try and help, you can't blame them if the Adver hasn't reported it accurately. But the fact remains that these people at least tried.

As for your very strange comments about dogs and pooing on lamposts, I suggest you take those to your psychiatrist.

What have you done to try and clean up the park?
