Working and thriving in any rural community as an artist is a challenge. With government cuts to the Arts Council budget and uncertainty about Britain's economy in general, the knock-on affects are already being felt across the southwest Region.
So how can artists prepare themselves for what may well be a rocky road ahead?
A workshop, especially aimed at artists in Wiltshire, will take place at The Pound in Corsham on Wednesday 30 January, 10am-4pm. It will be a day of problem-solving through exploration of the issues that arise when living, working and running a creative business rurally.
And there will be plenty of time for artists to discuss their own needs and concerns and have them addressed at the workshop.
Open to performers, visual artists, designers, writers and all those engaged in creative work, the workshop will be led by artist Nancy Sinclair from Dartmoor-based and artist-led Aune Head Arts.
Nancy is highly experienced in developing, funding, coordinating and exhibiting arts projects in rural locations, including her own photographic projects on Dartmoor.
She has also lectured on the Arts Management BA programme at Dartington College of Arts since 1994 and is currently Award Leader on the MA in Arts Management at Dartington.
Nancy has led well-received workshop sessions with individuals and artist groups from across Devon and says the secret of her success is to "tap into the collective knowledge within the group, while sharing my own experience, knowledge and links to networks and resources."
