Funding for mobile CCTV unit

A MOBILE CCTV unit in Corsham should begin operating in the spring after it received extra funding this week.

North Wiltshire District Council's Area 4 Committee met on Tuesday evening to give money to several projects in the town.

The CCTV unit was granted more than £6,000, which will match the amount already set aside by the town council.

Deputy town clerk Peter Biggins said: "We are very pleased and we hope to have it up and running by March, so it is full steam ahead at the moment.

"The deployment of the CCTV will be intelligence led and it will operate in conjunction with the police.

"We set up a working group last year to look into the validity of it and it is going to be very useful to the town."

Mr Biggins said as well as monitoring crime and anti-social behaviour it may also be used to monitor crowds at events such as the summer fete.

Other projects to benefit from the meeting included Corsham Cricket Club, which will receive £8,642.

The club, based in Station Road, recently applied for grants to buy new safety and practice nets.

The nets are desperately needed before the club embarks on a training initiative with six local schools this spring.

In addition, Corsham Town Council received £669 towards the installation of a bus shelter in Bradford Road.

The authority was also given £4,454 towards improvements to the children's play area in Neston, which was conditional upon the balance of funding being in place.

It was estimated that around 400 children use the facilities on the recreation ground, and at a meeting in June villagers said they would like to see the area improved.

The largest sum of money to be awarded went to Mansion House Pre-school who will receive £20,258 for the conversion of new premises.

The playgroup, which has been running for 40 years, needs to move to a new building as the rent for Mansion House has become too high and the accommodation does not allow for expansion.

The playgroup has been offered the vacant caretaker's bungalow in the grounds of St Patrick's Primary School.

Other organisations to benefit from meeting included Corsham Knitting and Crochet Group, which will get £500 and the newly formed Katherine Park Residents Association, who will receive the same amount to hire a venue for meetings.
