MYSTERY surrounds the closure of the Rose and Crown pub in Chippenham.

The pub, in Market Place, closed in the first week of January and the door was sealed off with a large metal sheet.

The pub was recently named as the top venue in Chippenham according to the internet social networking site Facebook.

A spokesperson for Enterprise Inns, the company that manages the pub said: "The pub is temporarily closed while we search for a quality operator to run it.

"We cannot comment on the financial aspect of any of our pubs."

The pub, one of the oldest in Chippenham, was only taken over by father and son duo Elliot and John Jeffries in November.

At that time, John Jeffries, 24, said: "I want to see the pub return to its glory days when it was the busiest pub in the town."

The pair, who also manage the Old Road Tavern, became licensees of the Rose and Crown and Little George pub at the same time.

Elliot Jeffries said he was unable to comment on the sudden closure of the Rose and Crown.

The pub has been used as a venue for the Chippenham Folk Festival during the last few years.

It is unknown how long it will remain closed.
