A ROUND the clock national energy-saving event is being backed by a Swindon MP.

The UK's first energy saving day, nicknamed E-Day, will last from 6pm tonight until 6pm tomorrow.

People will be encouraged to save energy by doing simple things such as turning off lights in rooms that are not being used, not leaving televisions on standby and unplugging mobile phone chargers when the phones are not on charge.

The National Grid will be monitoring the levels of energy usage as the day goes on and updates will be posted on the E-Day website throughout the day.

At the end of the day, the totals will be calculated to see how much energy we as a country have saved.

The concept has won the backing of South Swindon MP Anne Snelgrove.

"E-day will show how much energy we can save on a day-to-day basis," she said.

"I hope it will show how much good we can do for the environment by taking such simple steps.

"So I urge everyone to participate in E-day.

"Let's see how much energy we can all save."
