New book probes Stonehenge secrets

Comments (17)A NEW book that delves into the secrets of Stonehenge is being published soon.
Anthony Johnson, an archaeologist who is also a part time tutor at the University of Oxford, will launch Solving Stonehenge in the next few weeks.
Anthony was first introduced to Stonehenge in the 1970s by Professor Richard Atkinson while studying at University College in Cardiff.
The book is an investigation into the Wiltshire landmark and promises to unearth secrets that have been buried for centuries.

I seriousaly doubt it.
Yet another theory with serious flaws.
The sarsen ring was never complete. stone 29 could not have held a lintel, and the Aubrey holes never held posts according to Atkinson.

It has a new name; Early Carboniferous (Arundian Age) High Tor Limestone; being the lower-half Heelstone Ditch "white stone" backfill. Auger cored by Denke in 1656, excavated by Hawley and Newall in 1923, excavated by Atkinson in 1953, excavated by Atkinson, Piggott and Stone in 1956, and excavated by Pitts and Howard in 1979; the Heelstone Ditch "white stone" fossil species New names in The Book Grant are; Aclisina, Aviculopecten, Bellerophon, Caninia cornucopiae, Chondrites, Cleiothyridina roissyi, Composita, Conocardium, Delepinea (Daviesiella) destinezi, Euphemites, Girvanella, Hapsiphyllum (Zaphrentis) konincki, Linoproductus, Megachonetes papilionaceous, Michelina grandis, Mourlonia, Murchisonia, Palaeosmilia, Plicochonetes, Rhipidomella michelini, Schellwienella cf. The second point is equally interesting, was the circle of lintels ever complete? The argument that it was not rests largely on the idea that the broken and leaning sarsen stone 11 (not stone 29 quoted above) of the Circle, is too narrow to have supported lintels. If that were true we then need to explain why the two neighbouring stones (10, still upright, and the fallen stone 12), both have pairs of tenons, which at the very least suggests that lintels were intended to have carried across all three.
There are many other interesting aspects to consider, and much overlooked detail, if we really want to move on its time to break the loop of fact by repetition. And I stress again that the phrases such as unearth the secrets are popular journalistic labels, made up to attract, what you might call a wider audience, readers wont argue with the fact that they certainly do that!

Yes I did meet Atkinson in his later years before he died of cancer.
Atkinsons record for publishing his findings were appaling.
Most of his Silbury work was useless.
As to EH changing their minds about the function of the aubrey holes well I'm sure they will change again if they ever get around to excavating the remaing holes.
I took part in the Stonehenge live 2005 that Mike Pitts organised where they built a foam henge.
Mike put a wooden lintel above stone 11 (which is not broken, only small) but I didn't buy his idea either.

HA wants to kill The Pagan (5.5 km), The Druid (3.0 km), and The Wiccan (1.5 km) again, History teaches it will take a Spirited National Treasure Sequel in Hawley and Newall terms to resurrect them.
