Date set for bridge repairs

WORK to repair the Black Bridge in Chippenham is expected to start by the end of this month.

The popular Black Bridge over the River Avon has been closed for safety reasons after holes were discovered in the bridge decking.

The closure has sparked protests from local people who use it regularly.

Inspections revealed that the decking had not been constructed in the way that the original designer had intended.

The work will involve removing all of the existing timber decking and replacing it with more durable steel plates to reduce maintenance and improve safety.

The Environment Agency has approved North Wiltshire District Council's improvement proposals for the bridge.

Orders for the specialist equipment needed to carry out the works have been placed and the contractor has advised a start on site by April 30 and completion by May 16.
